Some thoughts on suffering   Leave a comment

…………For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory;
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen [are] temporal; but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.
It would seem that the longer I live , the more suffering I see, and the more I get to ask the question why? I have seen it in many places. I have seen it in the workplace where employers mistreat employees, I have seen it in poverty stricken townships where I have lived and ministered. And I see it now most commonly in the day today trails of everyday life.
The why of suffering would drive a man out of his mind without the knowledge of the Sovereignty of God. Psalm 115: 3 makes it plain “The Lord is in heaven and does what ever He pleases, and if suffering did not please God or bring glory to Him in some sense, it would not make sense. One of my favourite Puritan authors. Jeremiah Burruoughs makes a very plain statement. He says “It is better to suffer ill in this world than to suffer for sin, it is better to have hardship than to sin against your greatest good, which is God. ( Which after all is the greatest commandment…”You shall Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind…( Deutornomy 6 and Exodus 20)
To say that our journey through life brings with it “light afflictions” is right. In my view. To be afflicted and even suffer in this world is simply not to be compared to the glory that is to come. There are no quick fixes. Only Repentance and faith in the only true God and Saviour of us all. Jesus Christ.
There is then the reliance we may have in the fact that God works, in our afflictions, to make us pure a holy and usable for His kingdom.
But more of this later
Peace be with you.
