Peace with God. -Thoughts on romans 5-11   Leave a comment

Ro 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified a through faith, we 1have peace cwith God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
One of the delightfull things about a “therefore in any text of the Bible is that you have to check and see what is its “There for” The preceding verse normally gives a good idea

Ro 4:25 He was delivered over to death for our sins l and was raised to life for our justification.
Christ is given as our substitute, Romans 5:1 makes it quite clear about what it does not say. It firstly says we have “peace with God through our Lord Jesus” That implies immediately to start of with that we were not at peace with Him at some stage. We were in fact at war with Him. At war with God? That is probably the dumbest thing I have heard anyone attempt. But humanity (that includes you) does this daily.

How ? We disobey His decrees ( The Ten Commandments every day) Can anyone claim not to have lied during the day? Not gotten angry (which akin to murder according to scripture) Not ever stolen anything ( (what about the pen you took from the office the other day) That would make you a liar, a murderer and a thief.
Now those are only three of the 10. Unless you feel like making any more claims to goodness. Read the other 7.

Now “therefore” to come back to the text, is an exhortation that Jesus was given as our substitute, to “take away God’s wrath due to each one of us, due to breaking God’s holy law. It would simply be suspect if God did not uphold His own law!
Understanding our place as law breakers and sinners is crucial to appreciating the power of this text. That “we have Peace with God, because God exacted the penalty due to you and me, from Jesus Christ, who is God incarnate Himself. In our place he stood condemned.
So we put our faith in this work that God has done for us, in giving a pardon when a person responds in Repentance and believes the good news. This good news is that God “Justifies” us. Taking the death of Christ as the means to “save “ us from what is due to us. Now payday for the unrepentant, looks like what the cross looked like. What happened to Jesus will happen to those who do not look to Him in faith and believe that what he has done is for their sakes.

The cross did this to Jesus. And I can only hope to be at best superficial, for my knowledge does not extend that far. The cross separated Jesus the man, from God His maker, He got what we deserve, the punishment due for our sins. Though he did not sin in anyway, he kept God’s law perfectly.
The war with God for those who believe in this tremendous sacrifice is over. God is “For us” when we put our faith in the finished worked of Jesus. Who justified us in the courtroom of heaven when he laid down His life for us. Is it obvious? No to the flippant and shallow reader of the Bible, this will never be obvious.Test yourself. Read the Gospel of Mark and see the divine hand acting on your behalf making peace with God for you!
What do we have now? Peace with God.
What else?
Ro 5:2 through whom we have gained access e by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

We have access to God. Something we have not enjoyed before. The hostility between us and God is gone, when we come to Christ, in repentance and faith! There is nothing more certain than that. In fact it is more certain than the floor we put our feet on, for this world is passing away. We have been give access to God and therefore we may have confidence to come to Him freely. This is the day of grace but like sands through the hourglass, these days are precious and few. Do not delay in coming to god , while there is access to God as your Savior from an eternity in hell. You do not believe God will forever reject those that reject this day of grace?
John 3:36 makes it abundantly clear.

Jn 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”

That is not a good place to be! An eterntity without God? That is unthinkable, I would rather lose everything I have now, than lose an eternity with God. What you do now will resound in forever. Now you have access to God through the Blood of our Lord Jesus shed for you. God’s wrath is just as much part of His nature as His love is. You ask how can this be? How can a God of Love send people to an eternity of lostness, an eternity void of goodness, no creature comforts no light, no peace, an eternity of lifeless life. You wonder how God can do this.
Lets deviate for our text and look at our commandments.
Deuteronomy 6:4-5
4″(A)Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the (B)LORD is one!
5″(C)You shall love the LORD your God (D)with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Deuteronomy 4:39
39″Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that (A)the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.

Take it to heart the text says, take it to heart. God is not sharing His glory with another, he is your maker and He will not share the worship due to Him, for that with another.

1 Corinthians 8:4
4Therefore concerning the eating of (A)things sacrificed to idols, we know that [a]there is (B)no such thing as an idol in the world, and that (C)there is no God but one.

Apart from that, we are His twice over! Think of it, He made you and gave you physical life, and then provides a way for you to have “spiritual life” What more should we add? We have His Word, ( the Bible) which tells us of His Person, His actions, His revealed will, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to defy One whose intention is to do you the greatest good. Think about it, if someone intends to do you good, and it is costly, would it not be offensive if the gift is shunned or neglected? Christ who died for our sins, was God putting his love on display. Not only that, but the shocking effects of what sin does to a man. The sheer weight of human wickedness does not seem to know an end. If you have lived this world any amount of time you will know it. People are not inherently good, they are inherently self centred, self absorbed and totally wrapped up in the thing that they worship or idolise. But God. Has come and in His Son made peace with us. Now think through this. Our question was, how could a loving God send people to hell? Well I have shown, as have the scriptures, That there is only One true living God. To whom all worship is due. The weight of glory of the gift he has given us in giving Christ as a sacrifice for sins, is a gift of eternal value. It never ceases. To reject a gift of that immense value is to incur a punishment that meets the value of the gift that was rejected. That punishment is eternal. And God is happy to punish those forever who have rejected His offer of eternal life. Those who rejected the gift will glorify God’s Justice and His glory and wrath will be on display for all eternity for all to see. Every knee will bow to Jesus Christ, as the Scripture says. Even in hell. God will be glorified because that is what is due to Him. And we who are “being saved from that wrath to come” we will glorify God, forever because the gifto of God is of eternal value for us. Christ died for our sins embrace the fact of your own desperate lostness and lose yourself in the all encompassing grace of a glorious Saviour who lives forever bringing to Himself those who put their faith in Him…
