An meditation on Zephaniah   Leave a comment

Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

An afternoon meditation.
Zephaniah is a one of the “minor” prophets. Only three chapters. The thrust of his message is one of God’s judgements coming against Judah for their worship of Baal, which included child sacrificing and mixing the true worship of God with other religions. Zephaniah’s name literally means “the Lord protects” But this is no reason for those who live idly and in disobedience to think that He will do nothing. No God, is about to step out onto the page in History where great calamity is prophesied for Judah. Yet after reading the drastic measures God says He will take against the disobedience of His people in the first three and a half chapters comes this encouragement.
The Lord your God is with you. That is the Lord; the Lord God almighty is with you. The one who speaks and creates the stars, the one who holds the earth in His hand and tends it like a garden, upholding it by the very word of His power. This is the God who says “The Lord your God is with you” and he is not just with us to observe how we live, He is with us to direct how we live. Our God is actively involved in our daily concerns. He sees us in the smallest details of our life, is there any place God cannot see? Why do people live as though God does not see or hear what they say or do? Knowing this should put in us the fear of Him. God demands our obedience, but here is the good news, He supplies what He asks for.
Ro 8:32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

All things, by all things this includes absolutely everything, Christ justifies and Christ sanctifies us. He saves us then he makes us holy and obedient. And in this He delights. That we may come to Him with every sin and every event in our day. And ask for wisdom and seek for His guidance in His Word, and live in the fear of Him who has been and is form eternity to eternity. Zephaniah says that God so delights in this saving act that “he rejoices over you with singing… I cannot imagine what it is to hear God speak; I have only heard His voice in His Word. But since He does speak, and in fact the worlds exist because He spoke them into existence! So what must it be like to hear God sing over His works? I can pretty much imagine it must be like standing at the Niagara Falls or the Victoria Falls in full flood and listen to the waters tumbling over the edge of the massive waterfall…God reigns supremely over all His creation. It is futile to attempt even one aspect of life without Him. But His Pleasure has to be in restoring, regenerating and reviving the work of His hands for in this work of salvation all the Glory goes to god and all the help comes to us who believe!
What a great saviour, who will not take their refuge in Him.
Eph 2:8 for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
Eph 2:9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

Sola Deo Gloria! To the praise of His Name.
