When Fear is good   Leave a comment

Nah 1:2 God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious;the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.
Nah 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

I am glad that God is who He is, no shades of uncertainty can be raised against Him. He is perfect in all His ways. Can I love Him for His Mercies and not for His Holiness? That kind of love to God is incomplete at best. “God is jealous” The text says, I am glad that God is that way. If he were not jealous over His possessions, ( which is all that He has made) No one would be safe. There would be no justice and no love, just chaos. There would be no final hope for the oppressed that somewhere along the line, the wicked will get their due.
Having said that, I am careful to say that I am glad, that I am His by creation and by redemption. Being just the one, I am left in a place where my corrupt nature provokes God to anger and I am indeed His enemy. This is a dreadful thought that men, unconverted leave themselves so open to the One true God, as those deserving of His wrath, making themselves an adversary of the Almighty is just about the most profoundly stupid thing anyone can do.
I am profoundly grateful that A God is indeed “slow to anger” if His anger had but a hair trigger what hope would there be for any of us? I am glad of it that God does draw the line and that the godless will not always triumph. That God is one of exceeding great power, and Power to save the most hopeless cases among men. There are not any ‘self made men” in heaven. Not any self righteous, who will declare themselves righteous before a God who is Perfect? This text in Nahum gives hope. And Nahum is not one of the user friendly books in the Bible, it is a prophecy of God’s impending wrath that is to be let loose against a nation that has been heathen and godless in their ways. It is a book declaring that God will not always bear with the sins of men and that there will come a day when all will come into account. The dreadful majesty of His Person, should make all those with any sense, fear rightly. It is only good sense to fear God who holds your life and soul in His hands, to do with as He pleases, would it please God to destroy the wicked? Yes it would. Not in malice but in a holy anger.
In the courts of heaven there is this hope and only this hope for any man. Jesus Christ the righteous. Who in our place took our condemnation for being unrighteous, who took our sin and the reason for our being objects of wrath in the sight of a Holy God, away, and made us objects of His mercy. I am glad that God would do this. I cannot understand why, since I personally don’t’ attach merits to my own self. But I know this. Where only wrath and everlasting punishment were due, Grace and Mercy have been meted out. And this is cause for great praise, and celebration, for Jehovah God has done this and it is marvellous in our eyes. it is a good thing to fear God, for to Him is due the fear for the glorious way in which He still chooses to save sinners from the judgements to come. Better to fear now, it makes perfect sense to stand in awe of His Awesome Holiness and splendour.
