Truth or something like it.   Leave a comment

If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.
– Mark Twain

I have heard it said that the average man ( or woman) have on average told at least one lie before 10 am in the morning. From experience I know it to be true. Who has not come to their place of work or leisure and not engaged in a conversation where someone enquires after your health ( when they are not really interested) and you have responded “I am fine thank you( when you know that you are not)
Been in a situation at work, and asked by a client where is my cheque and said “ your cheque is in the mail”(when you know it is not) It is far easier to fob off someone with a “little white lie” than to face the truth of the situation. Should you tell the truth the whole time? Most people in this relativistic age would say, “to much truth troubles the waters” or don’t be a stirrer. Most would tolerate a rude person and smile hypocritically when meeting them, instead of telling them to behave themselves. Truth requires the discipline of correction, in the Christian context we have church discipline, and mutual accountability. John Wesley’s class meetings normally started with the question “Brother how is it with your soul?” Most people these day, ( in my experience don’t want to know how is it with your soul! Who cares anymore? People are too busy too care. Some are too busy just surviving to care.
To tell the truth means to deny the lie. There has to be an absence of falseness and hypocrisy and for this almost superhuman strength is needed, for our need in this generation for affirmation will believe even the lie if it speaks well of us. Who has lately dared to speak up in a small group and stated the bare bones of their dilemma.
People do not have the stomach to tell each other the plain truth or to hear it. How are we to shepherd each other’s souls when it is not OK, to say “ I am not OK”
Did not Christ come to save sinners , then do we only think that we need to purged of our “clean sins” or is the truth not more like this, that most of us, would or have really been a murderous, hatefull, adulterer at heart. Who has not looked at another in a lustful or hateful way? Ever stolen a pen at work? Maybe just “forgot” to leave it on the desk and not take it home? That would be ‘stealing’. May the prophet Hosea said it best.
Hosea 4
1 Hear the word of the LORD, you Israelites,
because the LORD has a charge to bring
against you who live in the land:
There is no faithfulness, no love,
no acknowledgment of God in the land.
There is only cursing, [a] lying and murder,
stealing and adultery;
they break all bounds,
and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Because of this the land mourns, [b]
and all who live in it waste away;

Mark Twain had a point. If you tell the truth you don’t have to remember anything.
But a truthful man who can find?
