Not by might , nor by power but by Spirit ….   Leave a comment

Zechariah 4:6

Not by might , nor by power but by Spirit says the Lord Almighty.

On reflection on this text I am awed by this one thing, that it is sovereign work of God the Spirit who enables men to come to God, It is he who sanctifies them unto the holiness without which no one will see the Lord, and it is He who at last presents them to God when they at last appear before Him.

It is an awesome thing to think that God would do this for any man who by the Spirit comes to Him, it is a humbling thing because no one comes to God but by the Spirit. The works of piety performed by men do not achieve anything, yet they are held accountable for their deeds. This God we worship is an awesome God and a man facing God in His Supreme Holiness will surely die. So many times I wonder, why would God choose foolish men, men like me, out of the multitude of those upon the earth. This is no mere statement of low self esteem. Before God I have come to know myself as nothing.

I have come to know that no works of piety amount to anything, enough spiritual knowledge amounts to nothing without the regenerating Spirit. Oh what a mercy, that God would look upon wretched souls and have pity n them. It is the one attribute of God that I cherish, His mercy.

Yes this God whom we may come to in repentance and Faith, again a work of the Spirit. Has desired to show compassion to all who come to Him, and to those who come to Him, He has said.” I will in no wise cast you out” Now while this is not a strict exegesis of the text, it is a good reminder, that God the Spirit, is the one who awakens the soul dead in sin, to new life in Christ. So that no man has reason to boast in anything but in the Lord. With that thought. I can offer this comfort from the Psalmist to soul still struggling in sin and weakness. “ Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord –Psalm 31:24.”
All of christian life, is a work of God, from beginning to end. God does get the Glory and we do get the help.
Soli Deo Gloria
